History of the SI Hotel
1840 - 1842: The Steglitz Locomotive Theatre perform musical theatre and comedies.
From 1862 ’til 1967 the Albrechtshof stood on the present site of the hotel. It was erected under the direction of Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Albrecht as a multi-functional building with a hotel, restaurant and theatre. In 1912 the Albrechtshof Picturehouse was introduced to complete the ensemble.
The Steglitzer Kreisel has definitely earned the reputation as a scandalous building project. Building began in 1968 but came to a halt in 1974 due to the building contractor going bankrupt. This all happened under very confusing circumstances and cost the financial president and one senator their jobs. In 1977 building continued again and was finished in 1980. The projected 180 million DM building costs turned into 320 million and was therefore massively over budget.
A shopping center was planned for the frontal flat-roofed part of the Steglitzer Kreisel but instead of this the Tourotel moved in, one of 40 locations of the hotel chain from Wienerwald Germany. 1982 Wienerwald Germany was forced to file for bankruptcy and therefore the hotel became vacant.
During 1974, Klaus-Volker Stoller was director of the Hotel Schweizerhof, located at the Tiergarten, in the then divided city. In 1978, the owner of the hotel Mr. Holzmüller, bought the hotel opposite to them which was at that point still a 5 star Hilton Hotel. The responsibility for our building was then also given over to him.
1982 he took over the rental contract for the Tourotel together with Mr. Köller, a tour operator from Bremen. On the 1st of October, 1982, the Hotel Steglitz was opened with 213 guest bedrooms, which at this time was the most spacious in the city. There was a restaurant, cocktail bar as well as three banqueting facility rooms which were able to offer room for eight different groups with the use of partitioning walls. There was even a small gym with sauna, although you had to cross the first-floor lobby in your dressing gown to reach it. This is where the present-day Atrium is to be found.
Of course since then many things have changed. Numerous alterations have made the hotel the way it is today. We are especially proud to say that we have been accompanied on this journey with many long-standing staff members and business partners. We hope that this is proof for you, that loyalty and sustainability aren’t just buzz-words for us, but a part of our living tradition. A tradition, which we offer fully to our guests.
